Performance of Buffalo calves fed rations containing different sources and levels of full fat seeds

Abstract: The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of replacing 10 and 20% of the concentrate mixture by whole canola or sunflower seeds at levels (5 and 10%) respectively in buffalo rations on nutrients digestibility, feeding value, animal performance and carcass characteristics. The experiment was conducted at summer rautumn seasons of year 2002 and extended for 225 days duration period for fattening buffalo calves.Twenty five buffalo calves, average initial body weight was196.28 ± (1.52) kg and approximately 13 months of age, assigned randomly into five similar groups according to their live body weight. The experimental rations consisted of concentrate feed mixture (2% of live body weight) clover hay at 0.5% of live body weight and rice straw 1% of live body weight. The concentrate mixture inthe control group T1 was used without any replacement of whole canola or sunflower seed. While in T2 and T3, 10% and 20% of the concentrate mixture were substituted by 5% and 10% of whole canola seeds, respectively. However, in T4 and T5, 10% and 20% of the concentrate mixture were substituted by 5% and 10% of whole sunflower seeds, respectively.
The digestibilities of OM, CF and NFE were decreased but DM, Cp and EE digestibilities were increased by feeding canola and sunflower seeds in rations. There were insignificant differences among all experimental rations in the feeding values expressed as TDN or DCP. The average daily gains were 0.630, 0.642, 0.686, 0.711 and 0.733 kg for T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 respectively. The feed cost L one kg weight gain ranged from 7.18 to 8.36 LE for all experimental rations. The dressing weight was 294, 295, 299.77, 295.25 kg for T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 groups, respectively. Boneless meat percentages were 77.0, 79.0, 80.0, 81.6 and 82.2 % for T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 respectively.
Based on the results of this study it could be concluded that he whole oil seeds supplementation especially 10% sunflower seed might be the most suitable for fattening buffalo calves either nutritionally or economially.
